This focus sequence delves into this intriguing field that has become integral to conducting business; i.e. personal computers, networks, ACES databases, and GeoBase are changing faster than most organizations can address and will only increase in importance. The sequence builds on most courses in the core of the curriculum because the future of all engineering management will use information technology and resources. Specifically, this sequence builds on the Strategic Information Management course (IMGT 684). Students begin this sequence by receiving an in-depth understanding of the importance of information strategy in organizations which is driven, in many cases, by a chief information officer (CIO). Initial coursework in this sequence focuses on the system analysis and design underpinnings for the creation or modification of the information technology systems that the students will use on the job. Following the System Analysis and Design course, students will receive exposure to a maturing element of IRM called knowledge management. This course introduces students to the fundamental difference between data, information , and knowledge and explores how knowledge can be equated to the intellectual capital of organizations. The course concentrates on the people, process, and technology issues associated with organizational knowledge creation and management and identifies critical links to promoting and sustaining innovation in organizations. Students complete this sequence with a course on business process improvement(BPI), where they explore aligning information use with organizational processes to meet organizational needs. This sequence provides the depth for students to effectively address research topics in this dynamic field.
