Health Promotion from Appalachian State University is a Campus Bachelor Health Science degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The ASU Health Promotion degree program is designed to prepare students to work as health promoters. Health promotion has been defined as "the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health." (Am J Health Promotion 1 (23:6-9, 1986). Students completing the Health Promotion degree program are fully equipped to lead out in programs geared toward helping people to stop smoking, lose weight, eat better, exercise more, stop abusing drugs, and manage stress. Two certifications are available to students completing the degree program. These include the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. (offered at various national sites), and the Health/Fitness Instructor from the American College of Sports Medicine (offered at ASU). Students earning a BS degree in health promotion will have the competencies needed to provide leadership at a wide variety of settings, including public health agencies in the community, clinical facilities such as hospitals and medical clinics, college and university student wellness departments, voluntary agencies, and worksite health promotion departments.
