The program prepares Spanish-speaking dual language/bilingual teachers, early interventionists, and prospective teachers hoping to work with very young children (ages birth through age 8) for whom Spanish is the primary language. Young Spanish-speaking children entering the school system need teachers who can speak with them in their home language, who are well prepared with a wide teaching repertoire, and who understand the intellectual, linguistic, and emotional needs of young children. This program will prepare you to work in bilingual or dual language special education and inclusive bilingual classrooms, to work with parents and with the community, and to act as an advocate for the children you teach. You will understand and support children as individuals with a range of learning styles, backgrounds, and aspirations, all valued in building a democratic society. You will learn a developmental-interaction approach to early childhood education that will teach you to support the growth, development and learning of the whole child. You will learn assessment strategies that enhance your understanding of development and of the learning process. You will discover ways to recognize and nurture individual learning styles and build home/school connections.
