Doctor's degree Anthropology from Brandeis University is a Campus Ph.D Anthropology degree that prepares you for a Science career. The doctoral program's curriculum allows students to organize a program of study around their particular anthropological interests. At the same time, the program is structured so that a broad familiarity with the anthropological discipline is achieved. Students take the two foundational courses (History of Anthropological Thought/ANTH 201a) and (Contemporary Anthropological Theory/ANTH 203b) in their first two years of study. These courses emphasize epistemological issues in anthropological research and ground these issues in the history of the discipline and in contemporary anthropological debates. Designing Ethnographic Research (ANTH 202b) is also required. The remainder of a student's course program is organized around his or her particular interests, with the guidance and approval of the student's advisory committee. The doctoral program is divided into three stages: 1. The coursework stage, during which a student fulfills the department's requirement of 16 semester courses (normally to be taken at the full-time rate, i.e., 3 or 4 courses per semester) and prepares for the General Examination; 2. The proposal stage, during which a student develops advanced skills and expertise in a specialized area of anthropology , passes the General Examination, completes the Foreign Language Examination, and submits and defends the Doctoral Proposal 3. The dissertation stage, during which a student submits grant proposals, to external funding agencies, carries out research, and writes and defends a doctoral dissertation. After completing formal course work doctoral students take the General Examination, which tests for general knowledge of method and theory in anthropology. It is expected that the General Examination will be taken no later than 6 months after the residency requirement has been fulfilled. This weeklong, take-home written examination is administered once each semester. Students are free to consult notes and books during the examination period. Following the faculty's evaluation of the written examination students are invited to discuss their answers in an oral defense. Having completed course work and the General Examination, students prepare a Dissertation Proposal. When the student's advisory committee agrees that the dissertation proposal is defensible, the document is circulated among the entire faculty and made available to graduate students two weeks prior to a formal oral proposal hearing. After the hearing, the chair of the advisory committee prepares written comments to guide the revision of the document. The student submits the final version of the proposal within two weeks of receiving the chair's comments. The commitee then has one week to pass or fail the dissertation proposal.
