Chemistry Education from Brigham Young University - Provo is a Campus Bachelor Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. Purpose Prepare men and women of character to teach chemistry at the secondary school level and to contribute to their community and profession. Education for this degree has two components: 1) under the direction of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, study of the major subdisciplines of chemistry , related science disciplines, and professional practices in science, and 2) under the direction of the McKay School of Education in collaboration with the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, formal training in the practice and methods of teaching. Both areas of education incorporate the Mission and Aims of BYU. Expected Learning Outcomes 1. Graduates of this program will be able to apply an understanding of chemistry and methods of pedagogy to teaching concepts and problem solving in chemistry at the high school and advanced placement level. This broad outcome is further elaborated in outcomes 2?8. 2. Graduates will demonstrate a solid conceptual understanding of the structure and reactivity of matter and will firmly grasp the key ideas and practices in analytical, organic and physical chemistry. 3. Graduates will have strong problem solving skills in chemistry , be able to employ sound laboratory skills, including good standard lab practices and accurate record keeping, and will be able to design effective experiments, critically analyze data, and apply basic statistical principles to experimental results. 4. Graduates will be able to design and develop inquiry-based science teaching units. They will have acquired practical teaching experience and be able to direct high school student labs and conduct demonstrations in accord with safe laboratory practices. 5. Graduates will be able to search the scientific and pedagogical literature for needed information, to read and understand technical publications, and to communicate scientific information in written and oral reports and with technical graphics. 6. Graduates will be able to manage the typical range of challenges in the classroom, lab, and field trips, and they will have developed skills in teaching high school students with different cultural backgrounds. 7. Graduates will understand professional and scientific ethics. They will apply the Moral Dimensions of Teaching embraced by the McKay School of Education. 8. Graduates will appreciate the wide range of careers that study of chemistry can lead to. 9. Graduates will appreciate the role of faith in God by scientists.
