Role of a Physician Assistant Physician Assistants (PAs) are formally trained professionals who provide diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care services under the supervision of licensed physicians. Work as members of the health care team by taking medical histories, examining and treating patients, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays, making diagnoses, prescribing medications, and managing life-threatening emergencies. Treat minor injuries by suturing, splinting, and casting. PAs may also serve as principal care providers in rural or inner-city clinics where a physician is present for only one or two days each week. Accreditation Drew's Physician Assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) and the Physician Assistant Committee on the Medical Board of California. Upon completion of an accredited program, graduates are eligible to take the national PA board examination offered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
