Developing an understanding of the scientific basis for such challenging environmental issues as global climate change is an important focus of our undergraduate curriculum, which explores how the complex earth system works in such a way as to encourage students to think creatively about processes and to address earth and environmental problems from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students may choose to major or concentrate in either earth science or environmental science. The earth science track is designed for students who wish to study the geological, tectonic, and hydrologic processes that shape the earth, whereas the environmental science track focuses on the complex interactions between the earth's physical environment, the biosphere, anthropogenic influences, and global climate change. What career opportunities follow upon study in this field? Students typically enter one of three career tracks, depending on their program of study. Academic teaching or advanced geoscience research careers usually require graduate degrees , so many of our students continue on to graduate school to obtain masters or doctorate degrees.
