Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Photography from Cornish College of the Arts is a Campus Bachelor Photography degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. During the first year, students study the material, technical, and conceptual foundations of visual art and are challenged to re-evaluate their notions of what art is, what it does, and how it is made. Students are also encouraged to explore the vast potentials of creating and collaborating. In the second year of study, media-specific studio work is introduced and each student begins to explore three of the five areas of subconcentration in year-long studio courses. During the third year, students select their two areas of subconcentration and pursue art-making in more intensive studio classes. In the fourth year, students are required to achieve self-motivated creative independence?the key to survival and success beyond the support of the academic arena. The Art Department encourages students to engage in intermedia and cross-disciplinary artistic projects. Formal opportunities for these collaborations exist in departmental courses and exhibition programming, as well as in interdepartmental courses and productions. Informal opportunities for student collaborations abound. Students enrich their studio experience by choosing from a wide range of electives both inside and outside the major. Art History and Art Theory courses provide students with historical and conceptual contexts for their applied work while placing a strong emphasis on sharpening students' verbal and written language skills. Students also take a variety of Humanities and Sciences classes, which enrich the degree program. These courses harmonize with and are integral to a Cornish arts education. Photography The Photography Program includes black and white, silver based processes, alternative and non-silver processes, small to large format camera techniques, field and studio lighting experience (in our combined natural and artificial lighting studio), photographic art history, critical theory, and special topic electives. The program emphasizes a rigorous learning of craft and an aesthetic awareness that supports both innovative and conceptual exploration as well as traditional approaches to the medium. Students are encouraged to research, explore, and initiate work that reflects their personal creative vision. View more details on Cornish College of the Arts .
