Career Paths: Graduates from the Machine Tool Technology program will be prepared to seek job opportunities in a variety of manufacturing industries, including: Automotive Industry Tool & Die Industry Plastic Extrusion & Injection Industry Aircraft Industry Agricultural Equipment Industry Maintenance and repair shops The Industry: Machine Tool Technicians work with special inspection tools and manufacturing equipment, including band saws, drill presses, manual lathes, manual mills, cnc lathes, cnc mills, computer-aided drafting (cad), computer-aided machine development (cam), live tooling lathes, and cmm inspection equipment. Technicians are required to read a blueprint and program the correct "G" and "M" codes needed to produce a quality part on a cnc machine. Machinists usually work indoors in a shop environment as part of a team. Individuals should possess strong interpersonal skills for interacting with co-workers. Individuals who are responsible and can manage their own time and effort make excellent machinists . Individuals working in the manufacturing field need to possess excellent math skills and pay close attention to detail. Machinists should continually update their skills by participating in continuing education classes and attending seminars and trade shows. Opportunities are not limited to those listed. Some technicians gain experience and later assume supervisory roles or become self-employed. 2-year Associate of Applied Science Degree The Associate of Applied Science degree , with a major in Machine Tool Technology , is a four-semester program that contains technical, advanced technical and general education courses. The advanced technical portion of this course is taught in the summer. Graduates will possess the knowledge and skills needed to program, tool and operate CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) mills and lathes. Graduates will also have the skills needed to draw and program in Mastercam. The Machine Tool Technology program advisory committee, composed of representatives from the manufacturing field, annually updates machining skills needed for immediate and successful employment.
