Social Anthropologists explore the social and cultural diversity of human experience, practice, and knowledge. This interest in diversity leads social anthropologists to study a wide range of phenomena, for example: gender and ethnicity; social suffering, violence and practices of healing; military culture; race, religion and diaspora; the role of the media in society; the production of history and historic conservation; popular culture, consumption and food; and the impact of globalization on local communities. Social anthropology faculty are currently studying these and other topics in many parts of the world, including China, Japan, Central America, Brazil, Nigeria, Italy and Greece, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. The basis for anthropological inquiry is fieldwork (firsthand research in a specific community or social setting), which forms the basis for ethnographic portraits or reports. Ethnographic materials allow anthropologists to formulate theories dealing with the particularities and commonalities of human experience in different societies.
