Divinity Master from Harvard University details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Master

Divinity from Harvard University is a Campus Master Religious Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The learned ministers we seek to educate are ministers who know how to learn in a variety of contexts. They know how to let the knowledge produced in one setting (a classroom, for example, or a congregation) interpret, deepen, and critique the knowledge produced in another. They have experienced intellectual work as spiritually formative. They are able to bring a variety of resources to bear on the needs and questions of religious communities and the larger communities of which they are a part. They speak in a public voice. The forms that learned ministry takes have increased in variety since the founding of our School. More than half of our MDiv students come to HDS to prepare for pastoral ministry in a congregation. Other students are preparing for ministries of social service, teaching and scholarship, hospital and prison chaplaincy, and interfaith ministry on college campuses. The variety of traditions our students represent has increased as well. Our students come from a range of Christian backgrounds—mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, evangelical, and Pentecostal. We have a significant number of Unitarian Universalist students, and a growing number of students from Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim communities who are preparing for religious leadership in the MDiv program. Our curriculum is built around the critical study of the histories, theologies, literatures, and practices of Christianity, but it is spacious enough to allow for field and classroom study in other traditions as well. Indeed, the serious study of traditions other than Christianity is a hallmark of the MDiv program at Harvard Divinity School. We believe that the study of religious worlds distinct from our own challenges us to consider the family resemblances among human concerns, to see the rich diversity of responses to such human concerns as a resource for thinking anew within our own tradition.
