EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN The Emergency Medical Technician is an entry-level care provider. Basic life support ambulance services are primarily composed of EMTs. First responders often act as second or third-position team members along with the EMT on an ambulance service. Fire personnel and other emergency teams may also be trained to this level. EMTs may also supplement paramedic or advanced life support staffing of ambulances. A national registry examination is required for certification. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN--INTERMEDIATE The EMT Intermediate is allowed to initiate IV therapy and has received training that enhances patient assessment and other basic level care. EMT-I's primary function in rural areas to enhance the level of care, or they augment paramedics in larger advanced life-support ambulance services. Clinical experience is provided as well as additional field training. This level is not necessary to progress to the paramedic program. A state board examination is required for certification. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN--DEFIBRILLATOR The EMT-Defibrillator provides EMT level care in addition to electrical therapy. Rural ambulance services operating at a basic life support level may enhance their services to a community by providing a defibrillation capability. The EMT-D is able to operate a defibrillator manually and to provide some cardiac care beyond the EMT level. Automatic defibrillation devices are a separate training program. Automatic defibrillation can be provided by first responders, EMTs and all other technicians. Manual defibrillation can be privided only by EMT-Ds or paramedics.
