With a faculty of 10, the Department of Musicology is among the largest in the United States, and its faculty members offer a wide variety of methodological and period specializations. At present more than 40 students are pursuing graduate degrees in the department, which offers both master's and doctoral programs. Students work closely with musicology faculty members, who are leading researchers in areas such as the music of ancient Greece, American jazz, and the works of composers such as Bach, Chopin, Debussy, and Ives. Methodologies to which students are introduced include archival work, critical theory, musico-literary studies, and analytical methodologies. Both faculty and students participate in the department's Colloquium Series and become involved in organizing conferences and symposia and hosting guest lectures by visiting scholars. In addition, musicology students can draw on other resources throughout the music school and the university, including the Renaissance Studies Program, the Center for the History of Music Theory and Literature, and the Institute of Ethnomusicology . The Graduate Musicology Association offers many activities for majors in the department, fostering an atmosphere of collegiality. IU graduates in musicology hold academic positions in colleges and universities across the country. Research and Performance Opportunities Students have access to the vast resources of the Cook Music Library, one of the nation's largest and most technologically advanced music libraries, as well as to the rare materials in the Lilly Library, the Archives of Traditional Music, the Archives of African American Music and Culture, the Latin American Music Center, and other specialized collections. Departmental and university-wide funding for research outside the university is also available. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in the department's Colloquium Series, as well as in conferences and symposia. The School of Music offers a wide variety of performance opportunities, including participation in orchestras, choruses, chamber music, and early music.
