The Theory and Composition track differs from the other four music bachelor's programs at IUP in the number of semesters that students are required to participate in ensembles. This track requires four semesters, while education requires seven, and the others each require eight. Instead of additional semesters of ensembles, you will take a series of courses in the area of composition and additional classes in theory. You'll also study piano with weekly lessons. The department's greatest resource is its faculty, composed of more than thirty full- and part-time artist-teachers including a number of seasoned composers. Each of IUP's approximately three hundred undergraduate music students has the opportunity to study with a specialist of his or her own instrument or voice. One of the requirements for admission to the Music Department is satisfactory completion of an audition. What You'll Become The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Theory and Composition track will prepare you for a variety of careers outside education. Some graduates with this degree go on to pursue graduate studies. IUP offers a master's degree in Music Theory and Composition.
