The objective of K-State's CE undergraduate program is to prepare students for professional careers in civil engineering . Our major goal is to provide CE students with the best possible education in civil engineering. Further goals are to instill in students a sensitivity to the social and humanistic implications of technology, and to motivate them to contribute for the betterment of society through their chosen profession. Options There are many choices that you can make as you enroll in our undergraduate civil engineering program. Among these is a choice of a concentration within civil engineering. Our undergraduate program offers four options: General Option - This is our most popular option. It allows you to pursue a B.S. degree in civil engineering through broad exposure to all aspects of our profession. These aspects include: o Environmental Engineering, which deals with the planning, design, and management of facilities and systems to protect public health and environmental quality. This includes the production & distribution of potable water, the treatment and disposal of municipal & industrial wastewater, management of solid and hazardous wastes, and air pollution control; o Geotechnical Engineering , which encompasses design and construction of foundations for structures, bridges, earth embankments, retaining walls and bulkheads, pavements for highways and airports, and waste containment structures; o Structural Engineering, which deals with the design and construction of a wide variety of buildings and bridges using concrete, steel and composite materials; o Transportation Engineering , which focuses on the planning, design, construction and operation of highways, railways, airports, and urban mass transit systems; and o Water Resources Engineering, which encompasses design, construction, and management of structures & systems that provide water for multiple uses including municipal, irrigation, power production, recreation and wildlife, and flood control. Construction Option - This option will allow you to focus on preparing for a career in the construction industry, such as with general or specialty contractors, construction divisions of major industrial concerns, or governmental agencies. Other employment areas might include financial lenders, equipment manufacturers, or material producers. Option coursework includes accounting, business law, and economics of design & construction. Environmental Option - This option will allow you to focus on preparing for a career in environmental engineering with consulting firms, government agencies, and pollution control industries. Option courses include biology, organic chemistry, and design of water and wastewater treatment systems. If you are enrolled in this option, you can also obtain a secondary major in Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences with as little as 3 hours of extra coursework. Structures Option - This option will allow you to focus on preparing for careers in structural engineering, consulting, government, or industry.
