The Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practi?tioner (PMHNP) is a registered nurse with a graduate degree in nursing who is prepared to administer advanced primary mental health care throughout a patient's life, in accordance with ANA's scope and standards of psychiatric and mental health nursing. The PMHNP's role includes comprehensive physical assessment, diagnosis, and medication management, in addition to psychotherapeutic interventions. Graduate prepara?tion allows the PMHNP to expand into the use of research, development and implementation of health policy, leadership, education, case management, and consultation in his or her practice (American Nurses Credentialing Center). PMHNP graduate students take two clinical courses covering advanced psychotherapy with individuals, families, and groups, and consultation/liaison nursing as well as core nursing theory and research courses. All successful graduates of the NP option meet requirements for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) exam for the Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). The graduating student may apply for a Certificate to Prescribe (CTP) from the Ohio Board of Nursing.
