Results of a recent programmatic evaluation revealed that this program was an "excellent undergraduate program that could be a model for others." ? Information about the SHED program is available through the HEDP Program office in 316 White Hall. The mission, intent, and purpose of the B.S.E. degree program in SHED at Kent State University is to prepare students for state licensure and employment as teachers in Ohio schools. Students are required to pass a series of PRAXIS tests in order to graduate and be granted state teaching licensure. Broad objectives of the SHED program include the following: Students will gain curricular experience and demonstrated knowledge in: 1. liberal education; 2. social and cultural diversity; 3. human growth and development; 4. health content; 5. pre-professional and professional coursework, and 6. professional identity; Students will participate in a series of guided field experiences. In addition, students will be supervised during their student teaching experience by program faculty/staff. Students will participate in curricular/clinical experiences and demonstrate functional knowledge and essential skills in the foundations of school health education . Such experiences focus on: the contextual dimensions of the school and of the school within the broader community; the relationship between health and academic outcomes; the development, implementation, and evaluation of coordinated school health programs; resources to support school health programs; the social-ecological framework within which health issues can be best addressed; history and philosophy of school health; role, function, and professional identity of school health educators; strategies of leadership designated to enhance the learning environment of schools based on better health individually and environmentally; current issues, policies, laws, and legislation relevant to school health; knowledge and application of current and emerging technology; and ethical and legal considerations in school health .
