The Program The Sports Turf Management curriculum provides students with the option of a one year certifcate in Turf Management or Turf Mechanics, (23 & 15 credits). The two year A.A.S. Degree is 68 credits. The certifcate program concentrates primarily on course work in the Turfgrass Management feld, while the AAS degree requires general education classes such as English, social studies and mathematics in addition to the general turf/horticulture courses. Students in Sports Turf Mangement learn from hands-on experience. For example, they learn fundamentals of turfgrass management in the class room setting and get the hands on experience in our outstanding intern program designed around a 10 week spring semester. Students have the opportunity to work in their chosen internship at the very beginning of the growing season and work through the end of summer, from early April through mid-August. Sports Turf students have worked with golf course superintendents on both the local and national level. Others have worked in Minor League and Major League baseball stadiums as interns. Our Sports Turf Management students use acquired skills from their Kishwaukee College training from all phases of horticulture discipline.Sports Turf students are encourage to learn about landscape design, bedding plants, foral design with tree and shrub identifcation, care and installation and environmental conservation. These skills are used as part of their Turf Management Careers. Career Opportunities Students of Sports Turf Management have many career options following graduation. The majority of students fnd golf course careers as assistant superintendents who eventually move up to the golf course superintendent's position. Others fnd work in a variety of other settings.
