Students pick one of the following tracks for further specialization: Biopharmaceutical engineering , which encompasses biochemistry and chemical engineering; Bioelectronics/Biophotonics engineering, which will appeal to students interested in electrical engineering and physics; Cell and tissue engineering, which straddles the fields of mechanical engineering , materials science, and molecular and cell biology. They receive rigorous training in the physical, chemical, and biological sciences, in basic engineering sciences pertinent to their track, and bioengineering basics and electives. The program strongly complements formal instruction with opportunities for experiential learning via seminar courses, extended research with faculty members in the junior and senior years, and required team-based and industry-sponsored design projects within Lehigh's Integrated Product Development program. Students are strongly encouraged to find summer internships or to participate in Research Experience for Undergraduates programs, and can participate in Lehigh's Co-op program. Students in the program learn how biological systems work, develop analytical skills, and use advanced tools in experimentation, modeling, and simulation. Students apply their knowledge to design, synthesis, manufacturing, and health care; develop strong communication skills; and are taught to bring innovation and creativity to problem-solving.
