Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

English from Lehigh University is a Campus Bachelor English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Most students are drawn to an English major by the intellectual and aesthetic opportunities it offers. English majors read widely and thoughtfully, explore the history and current scope of literature in English , write well-supported analyses and arguments, develop the imagination through creative writing, and participate in a community of teachers and students who value reflection, conversation, and discussion about issues and ideas that matter. Students benefit from small classes and individual attention. The English major emphasizes rigorous study of literary periods, genres, and authors. Majors take at least nine courses, four of which must be advanced (300-level) investigations of authors or literary periods. All majors take a gateway course and a capstone seminar, and they can choose additional courses from a wide range of electives. Courses are taught by faculty who are as strongly committed to excellence in teaching as they are to expertise in their scholarly fields. Although many of our alumni remain in academic life, going on for Ph.D.s and becoming professors, others enter careers in many areas, including education, business, law, journalism, public service, and creative writing.
