The program offers a wide variety of courses, including chemistry, environmental science, chemical engineering, hydraulic engineering , pollution control and waste management, and geo-environmental engineering to give students the tools and the opportunity to pursue focused projects that have real impact. The program prepares students for advanced study as well as for careers in fields such as environmental process engineering , environmental modeling, and hazardous waste management. Students in the program take part in industry- or government-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) projects, make presentations at national conferences, and work on design projects for industrial sponsors that solve real issues. In these projects, undergraduate students have helped make devices to remove toxic metals from water, investigated transport of bacteria in the presence of detergents, worked on sludge treatment at wastewater plants, prepared nanoscale iron particles, and analyzed samples and treated arsenic-contaminated water from the Indian subcontinent. Environmental Engineering students are encouraged to work on projects with students from other disciplines through Lehigh's Integrated Learning Experience (ILE) program, which encourages innovation and initiative while teaching teamwork, leadership, and communications skills. The Environmental Engineering program draws upon the strength of Lehigh's departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Earth and Environmental Science.
