The 129-credit Bachelor of Science program in Adolescence Education: Chemistry prepares a new generation of teachers to cultivate and enhance student success in chemistry. This program equips you with the skills, knowledge and foundation to motivate middle and high school students at various skill levels to learn the fundamentals of organic chemistry , biochemistry, physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry . The program includes supervised practice teaching in actual classrooms at two grade levels (7 to 9 and 10 to 12), allowing you to observe licensed teachers , interact with students, and understand the adolescent mindset as it relates to mathematics. Chemistry education majors also participate in an exciting one-year research project, where they work closely with a faculty member to investigate a subject (or topic) relevant to the faculty member's research interests. This hands-on application of the scientific process provides graduates with excellent preparation to serve as a skilled advisor to national science competitions. After you complete the degree requirements and successfully pass all licensure tests, including Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) Content of Specialty Tests (CST), respectively, you will be awarded Initial Teaching Certification by the New York State Department of Education to teach chemistry to grades 7 to 12. The Bachelor of Science in Adolescence Education: Chemistry is a joint program between C.W. Post?s School of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The teacher-education programs in C.W. Post's Department of Curriculum and Instruction are nationally accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), ensuring you receive the highest quality instruction. Chemistry Concentration for Education Majors As a Chemistry education major, you will receive a thorough grounding in the science, from its conceptual bases to the most advanced techniques. You will strengthen your understanding of inorganic and organic chemistry, physical chemistry , biochemistry and quantitative analysis. You will also study calculus and analytical geometry, and an introductory, calculus-based physics course. You will learn to critically interpret scientific papers, including graphical and statistical charts and tables, as well as present material in a variety of documentation styles used in scientific journals. A two-semester Chemical Research course, conducted under the supervision of a faculty advisor, will culminate in an original research report. Employment prospects for chemistry education majors are bright. There is a critical shortage of science and engineering teachers throughout the country, creating a demand for qualified graduates with a chemistry education degree. Recruiters from school districts throughout the nation seek our graduates and the C.W. Post Career Services office annually sponsors an education recruitment fair for students to meet potential employers. Program Highlights: C.W. Post has established partnerships with 80 schools on Long Island, Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, providing chemistry education majors with a wide range of potential sites for student-teaching and field experience. All professors in the Department of Chemistry have Ph.D.s and are well-respected scientists. As part of their required course work, students engage in research under the supervision of a faculty member. Recent faculty/student projects have focused on the properties of fluorinated polymers, the chemistry of small atmospheric molecules and characterization of novel organic compounds from marine and biological sources.
