Childhood Education from Long Island University - C W Post Campus - Brookville NY is a Campus Bachelor Early Childhood Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The 129-credit Bachelor of Science degree in Childhood Education prepares you to become a knowledgeable, caring and inspiring teacher of children who are in the first through sixth grades. In pursuing your undergraduate degree, you will examine theories of child development, motivation and learning for youngsters ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old. You will master the skills needed to encourage students to learn new material and to take responsibility for themselves and one another. As you work toward this degree will gain an understanding and appreciation of subjects ranging from science to music to language arts. You also will acquire techniques to assess and evaluate a child?s intellectual, social and physical development and learn the basic principles of classroom management for a diverse student population. The program will culminate in a semester-long student teaching experience that will allow you to practice your new skills in a classroom setting. This degree qualifies you for New York State Initial Teaching Certification. The Childhood Education major requires a concentration in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. You can select from one of the following areas of study: American Studies Earth System Science English Literature English Writing French Geography History Italian Mathematics Philosophy Political Science Psychology Science Social Studies Sociology Spanish After you complete the degree requirements and successfully pass all certification tests (LAST, ATS-W and CSTs), you will be awarded Initial Teaching Certification by the New York State Department of Education to Childhood Education (Grades 1 to 6). The Childhood Education degree is a joint program between C.W. Post?s School of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The teacher-education programs in C.W. Post's Department of Curriculum and Instruction are nationally accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), ensuring you receive the highest quality instruction.
