The Bachelor of Science in Music Education is a 132 to 140 credit program that leads to New York state music teaching certification. As a candidate for the B.S. in Music Education, you will take courses in music history and theory, applied music, general education and music education. You also will receive a well-rounded liberal arts education encompassing such subjects as science, literature, history, political science, economics, philosophy and foreign language. Music education students at C.W. Post become part of a vibrant artistic community, with access to concerts, workshops, master classes and collaborative projects throughout the year. The music education faculty comprises active musicians who perform in major venues in the Greater New York area and on national and international tours--often in company with their students. The program incorporates a semester of student teaching. Music education majors also are required to participate in a major performing organization: chorus, orchestra or symphonic band. Students who desire a greater emphasis on performance and one-to-one instruction in their instrument or voice major, should consider the Bachelor of Music in Music Education program. Post Campus will give you direct access to a wide variety of outstanding professional music-making in the form of concerts, workshops, master classes and collaborative projects. Recent musical artists who have worked with our students include: the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Chanticleer Choral Ensemble, Shanghai String Quartet, Bobby McFerrin, United States ?President?s Own? Marine Band, New York Voices, United States Air Force Band, guitarist David Leisner, flutist Sir James Galway, jazz artist Paquito D?Rivera, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. You will gain real-world experience in local classrooms, learning the profession of education and building a professional network. You will have an opportunity to make music as a soloist, chamber musician and large ensemble member both on campus, and as part of our domestic and international touring program. Music majors can become members of the Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education (CMENC), which promotes excellence in music teaching and learning through its outreach programs, national and international guest speakers, and conference participation.
