Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Materials Science and Engineering from Michigan Technological University is a Campus Bachelor Materials Science degree that prepares you for a Science career. Program Educational Objectives for the MSE Program Program Education Objective #1: Materials Science and Engineering graduates of Michigan Tech will be prepared to pursue a broad range of materials-related career and graduate school opportunities. This objective is reached through completion of a curriculum that emphasizes a conceptual approach to learning, and one which is flexible and designed to utilize these concepts to enable interest-driven programs of study. Program Education Objective #2: Materials Science and Engineering graduates of Michigan Tech will be effective contributors to the profession. This objective is reached by way of an education that provides a measured balance of theory versus practical applications, of traditional materials concepts versus topics of emerging importance within the discipline, and of traditional hands-on laboratory experiences versus contemporary workplace-oriented business and product development activities. Program Education Objective #3: Materials Science and Engineering graduates of Michigan Tech will be recognized and valued for their strong foundation in the basic engineering and scientific principles which underlie the structure, processing, properties, and performance of materials, thereby enabling the effective adaptation or extension to new technology as the needs of the profession and society evolve. Undergraduate Program Educational Outcomes For convenience, program outcomes will be considered to be those of EC2000 Criterion 3 and the four Program Specific Criteria for MSE Programs. 1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering 2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data 3. An ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs 4. An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams 5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems 6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility 7. An ability to communicate effectively 8. The broad education to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context 9. A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning 10. A knowledge of contemporary issues 11. An ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice The Program Specific Criteria for MSE Programs stipulate four additional outcomes. MSE1. An ability to apply advanced science (such as Chemistry and Physics) and engineering principles to materials systems. MSE2. An integrated understanding of the scientific and engineering principles underlying the four major elements of the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, namely structure, properties, processing and performance related to materials systems appropriate to the field. MSE3. An ability to apply and integrate knowledge from each of the four elements of the field (structure, properties, processing and performance) to solve materials selection and design problems. MSE4. An ability to utilize experimental, statistical and computational methods consistent with the goals of the program. View more details on Michigan Technological University .
