Program Description: Respiratory Therapy is an allied health program whose practitioners are employed under medical direction to provide treatment , management, diagnostic evaluation, and care to patients with problems associated with the cardiopulmonary system. Job responsibilities vary from the administration of oxygen, humidity, aerosols and the drainage of lung secretions, mechanical ventilation, to the use of technologically sophisticated monitoring devices and treatment techniques to enhance the survival of patients in intensive care units. Respiratory therapists may also perform pulmonary function testing. The Respiratory Therapy Program is a cooperative effort between Collins Career Center and Marshall Community & Technical College. There are 30 semester credit hours required from Marshall Community & Technical College. The student may either complete the MCTC courses prior to application to the program or finish the courses while completing the Respiratory Therapy courses at Collins Career Center. Career Outlook: Job opportunities are expected to be very good, especially for respiratory therapists with cardiopulmonary care skills or experience working with infants. Employment of respiratory therapists is expected to increase faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016 because of substantial growth in numbers of the middle-aged and elderly population?a development that will heighten the incidence of cardiopulmonary disease.
