Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio State University - Main Campus is a Campus Bachelor Industrial Engineering degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. Industrial engineering (IE) is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. (IIE, 1985) Today, organizations from every sector of our economy?banking, food, energy, health care, commercial aviation, textiles, and government?turn to industrial engineers for help in improving their productivity. Furthermore, as the technology of an industry becomes more sophisticated, the industrial engineers who inform and guide the managers of these organizations often are called upon to become managers themselves. In short, industrial engineers are systems integrators and productivity enhancers. For many students, IE provides the perfect blend of technical skills and people orientation. Industrial engineers are systems people. They work in teams with other engineering specialists and business specialists to design and improve the systems which produce our goods and services. The IE addresses the overall system performance, responsiveness to customer needs, and the quality of the products or services produced by the company. They are also the specialists who ensure that people can safely perform their required tasks in the workplace environment, while also performing to their maximum efficiency. In this context, IEs match the workplace to the needs and capabilities of the people who work there. This includes consideration of people\'s ability to safely and productively work with computers and other automated systems in industries, office, and service industries such as health care and retailing. Program Educational Objectives We expect our graduates two to three years after graduation are: 1. Employing science and engineering methods to design, operate, evaluate, and improve integrated systems of people, machines, materials, information, energy, and financial resources. 2. Expanding and enhancing their professional skills on an ongoing basis. 3. Effectively communicating opportunities and solutions to technical and non-technical communities. 4. Working effectively and ethically as leaders and members of teams, and as individuals. Co-Curricular Opportunities There is a very active student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), the national professional organization for industrial engineers, at Ohio State. Professional speakers at monthly meetings and sponsoring field trips to local businesses who use industrial engineering principles are the primary professional activities. In addition, IIE members tutor math and science at a local high school and participate in other college- and university-wide service projects, as well as help at various departmental events throughout the year. IIE members also actively participate in university co-ed recreation teams. There is also a student chapter of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), which sponsors speakers and field trips for its members. Industrial engineering students are active in a number of other engineering-related student organizations, such as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the College of Engineering\'s Engineer\'s Council. ISE students are encouraged to take advantage of the Engineering Career Services office to help them get a co-op or internship opportunity anytime after the end of their first year. Co-op and/or internship experience not only helps a student earn high wages toward their academic expenses, but also to use the knowledge gained to decide what area, if any, in which they may wish to concentrate their technical electives, and/or whether graduate work would be appropriate. A student often receives a job offer upon graduation from a company with which they co-oped or interned. ISE students often find time to also take a minor in addition to their major course work. A minor helps a student explore the basics in another area of study which will be ultimately helpful in their careers. Students take minors in nuclear engineering, manufacturing engineering , biomedical engineering, business, psychology, languages, and many other areas available at Ohio State. Career Prospects in Industrial and Systems Engineering Industrial engineers find professional employment in virtually every sector of our economy. Some companies have industrial engineering departments; others hire industrial engineers to work as manufacturing engineers, strategic planners, quality engineers, work place or product designers, information specialists, production supervisors, or technical sales representatives. They operate in production, service, and public sector organizations designing and analyzing the performance of productive systems. Also, industrial engineers are valued in consulting for their problem-solving abilities and their ability to adapt their knowledge and skills to new situations. Although the bachelor\'s degree admits one to professional practice, employers often seek industrial engineers with MS degrees. PhD industrial engineers find employment in research or management activities in industry or as college and university teachers. Industrial engineers frequently obtain higher degrees in law, medicine, business, and hospital and public administration. Demand for industrial engineers is currently strong. Increasing global competition has resulted in more small firms looking to industrial engineers to improve productivity and quality. This supplements the demand from the larger companies that have long been the primary employers. Estimates of the needs of our nation for the type of expertise embodied in the industrial engineering degree indicate that industrial engineering careers will be in significant demand for the foreseeable future.
