Program Goals A graduate of this major should be able to: demonstrate safe work habits and be conscious of safety when working with machinery. read blueprints, interpret drawings, understand specifications, and work within stated tolerances. apply mathematics in the machine tool trade (speeds, feeds, thread measurement, sine bar, etc.). apply the principles of metallurgy to the science of heat treatment operations including hardening of steel, carburizing, case hardening, tempering, and annealing. operate machine tools and demonstrate knowledge of their construction in relation to the metal working industry. demonstrate knowledge of the construction and operation of production machinery of various manual and computer controlled machine tools . demonstrate skills on Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) milling and turning centers, sinker and wire Electrical Discharge Machines (EDM). operate abrasive cutting machines such as surface, cylindrical, internal, and form grinding equipment. demonstrate skills in quality control, inspection, gauging methods, and production control as they relate to manufacturing, design, and production.
