The Anthropology Department at Portland State University offers a program leading to the Master of Arts degree . The program is designed to give the student a graduate level of competence in general anthropology, including the major subfields of biological anthropology , archaeology, and sociocultural anthropology. At the same time, the program will permit the student to pursue a special interest in one of the subfields. Students have the option of choosing either the thesis track or the applied/policy track. The applied track is designed to prepare students for professional employment related to applied anthropology . Students in this track will complete an internship and internship paper, and 8 additional hours of coursework, in place of the traditional thesis. The thesis track candidate is required to do research in an area of special interest and prepare a thesis based upon it. The master\\\'s program has been planned for students who hold an undergraduate degree in general anthropology or its equivalent in course coverage. Under these circumstances, the master\\\'s degree , including research and thesis, may be completed in two to three years.
