During the first two years of study at Rend Lake College , full-time students should complete requirements for an Associate of Arts in Teaching Special Education Degree. This degree provides students with the program equivalent of the first two years of most four-year teacher education programs in special education. Students should always contact the transfer institution before completing the outlined curriculum. The degree is comprised of general education courses, professional education courses, and courses in the Special Education major area. The eleven Illinois professional Teaching Standards, the Technology Standards for all Teachers, and the Core Language Arts Standards are addressed in this curriculum. Students will be required to pass the Enhanced Test of Basic Skills for program completion. This test will be administered no later than the point at which the student accumulated 45 semester hours. Education majors should apply to the four-year College or university up to one year before transfer. The student is not guaranteed admission into a baccalaureate degree program merely by completing this curriculum. Most baccalaureate degree programs require a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher for admission.
