Middle Eastern Studies from Rutgers University - New Brunswick is a Campus Bachelor Area Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Learning Goals Majors will be able to demonstrate language proficiency at the Intermediate level (two years) or above in one of the Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish); an interdisciplinary foundational knowledge of the languages and cultures of the Middle East; and an understanding of key themes in Middle Eastern cultures, history, and contemporary social, economic, and political issues. Majors will be able to engage in cross-cultural communication and understanding; analyze how stereotypes hinder intercultural understanding; think dynamically about the relationship between the United States and the third world; and, initiate, research, and write a semester-length independent research paper. Major Requirements The interdisciplinary major in Middle Eastern studies consists of 34 credits which are distributed in the following manner: no more than 16 credits in a Middle Eastern language (e.g. Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish or other less commonly taught languages) demonstrating proficiency through the intermediate level. Students with advanced placement beyond the intermediate level are required to take at least two semesters of further language study. Students with prior knowledge of a Middle Eastern language must choose their courses for the language requirement in consultation with and with the approval of the MESP Director. In addition, majors must take 6 credits in the two core Middle Eastern Studies courses: 01:685:350 Introduction to the Middle East and 01:685:499 Senior Seminar in the Middle Eastern Studies . In lieu of the Senior Seminar in Middle Eastern Studies, majors may substitute an equivalent Senior Seminar in a related discipline (e.g. Art History, History, Jewish Studies , Political Science, Religion, Sociology or Women's and Gender Studies) that has the Middle East as its focus, with the approval of the Director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program. The remaining 12 elective credits are taken from other courses offered by the Program and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies , or from approved cross-listed courses relevant to the Middle East offered by contributing departments. The major may include no more than 6 credits of independent study or internships or a combination of these.
