B.A.: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MAJOR Completion of this degree prepares for state licensure to teach children in kindergarten through grade eight. Students who are employed in a school system may complete practica and student teaching where they are employed if the school administration approves. The degree requires a concentration, and students seeking this degree may obtain endorsements in areas other than Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. A CONCENTRATION is defined by the State of New Mexico as a minimum of 24 hours in a teaching field and is suitable for K-8 teachers. Concentration areas include business, language arts, math, modern and classical languages, performing arts, physical education, psychology, reading, science, social studies, and visual arts. An academic ENDORSEMENT is defined by the State of New Mexico as a minimum of 24 hours, at least 12 of which must be at upper-division level (300-400) in a state-approved teaching field.
