Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Interior Design from School of Visual Arts is a Campus Bachelor Design degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. SVA is a fine arts school in New York City whose mission is to educate students who aspire to become professional artists. SVA?s interior design program provides students with cutting-edge technology and a faculty that consists of more than 30 working designers from some of New York's top firms. People need shelter in the same way that they need food and water. For such a basic necessity, our living spaces change constantly, always pegged to the flux of our cultural "weather." How we live is a reliable measure of where we are on the human-progress continuum. Lately, progress has been accelerating: Look no further than the computer chip. Students of interior design at SVA are surfing the learning curve at the speed of progress. Everything is digital now. Design . Presentations. Animated walk-throughs. Everyone has a personal Web page, which comes in handy as a digital portfolio; a CD-ROM version of your resume or portfolio can be used as a leave-behind on the job hunt. Many leading design firms lag behind SVA in the use of technology. We are cutting-edge to the point of being virtual industry pioneers, giving all of our students 24-hour unlimited access to our 3D modeling lab, complete with form?Z with 3D Studio VIZ applications. You will graduate with the proficiency expected of a computer artist. We also insist that you become as fluent with hand-drawing as with AutoCAD, exploring the power of both the pencil and the computer, since interior design is a professional degree that requires the skill of a visual artist. You will work in a fertile creative environment identical to a professional design studio, with your own fully equipped drafting space. Our students gain valuable experience working in teams as well as alone, and they embrace it and bloom. Studio classes are limited to no more than 15 students per six-hour class, so there's guaranteed individual time with the instructor each week - sometimes even twice a week. Our faculty consists of more than 30 working designers from New York's top firms. While recognized masters such as Neville Lewis and Theodore H. M. Prudon could teach anywhere they choose, they have been with the SVA Interior Design Department since its inception. With teachers from such companies as Gensler, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, you have networking opportunities every day. Many of our students do part-time work at the big studios - not as interns, but as paid employees. Interior design at SVA is a passionate business. Our students believe - are taught to believe - that working together with engineers and architects, good design can change the world. Whether you're designing a corporate interior , an assisted-living facility, a nightclub or a hospital, you have to weigh the importance of health, safety and welfare - physical and psychological - of the people using it. Spatial dimensions and proportions should be pleasing to the eye and mind, but other issues also need to be addressed. Such as, what will it be like to use that space for many hours at a time? Is the air exchange adequate? Are the fire exits easy to find? Interior design has cardinal processes and principles that are the solid structure of the discipline. The rest is dynamic and mercurial. You must be ready to flex with the changes in culture, technology and materials that are sure to come. Is the world becoming more urban or more sprawl? Will more buildings be made of titanium? Are self-ventilating buildings the way of the future? A probing mind is as powerful a tool as a true hand and eye. Good design is good thinking. View more details on School of Visual Arts .
