German Studies Bachelor from Smith College details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

German Studies from Smith College is a Campus Bachelor Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. How is it that the culture of German-speaking Europe has so profoundly influenced and shaped Western civilization?and especially the culture of the United States?through the centuries and into today? Can a liberal arts education be considered complete without an understanding of these influences? The Department of German Studies provides the opportunity for students to explore these questions and many more in its language , literature and culture courses. Here, students will not only encounter a culture of "poets and thinkers" (and, we might add, scientists, engineers, artists and, let's be honest, some pretty vile characters as well), but also have the opportunity to experience German language and culture firsthand with our own study abroad program in Hamburg, Germany. The German Studies Department has an unparalleled record in mentoring students for both undergraduate and graduate fellowships and offers opportunities for guided research with faculty members, who are, we might modestly but frankly note, some of the coolest people you will meet on campus. So whether you are looking for intellectual stimulation, advanced German-language skills or simply the cachet of possessing a great mind, the German Studies Department has something for you.
