Classics majors receive a liberal arts education giving them the analytical tools to pursue a wide range of careers. For thoughts about why you should major in classics, try this. The classics major at SIUC is designed to be flexible. Many students are able to complete it in addition to a second major in a different field. You may use many of the credit hours required for the classics major for other graduation requirements: 17 hours of course work in classics could count toward the fulfillment of university requirements for other majors. Starting in the summer of 2011, new majors (and continuing majors who opt for the new requirements) will be able to complete the major with only one year of either Latin or Greek. This will make it feasible for those who love classical civilization but find Latin or Greek difficult to complete the major; in place of the more advanced language study, such students will do additional coursework in English.
