Urban Forest Management emphasizes coursework and skills necessary for dealing with trees stressed by the urban environment as well as tree identification, forest ecology and ecosystems, forest social science, forest measurements, and forest resource management. Coursework is also included from a variety of biological and social science departments: plant pathology, landscape design, landscape plant materials and management, state and local government, and small businesss management. The SIUC undergraduate Forestry curriculum is accredited by the Society of American Foresters, and all specializations lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry. What facilities are at SIU? Located within ten miles of the SIUC campus are one national wildlife refuge, two state parks, four recreational lakes, and a national forest. The 270,000 acre Shawnee National Forest, in particular, provides students with a wealth of hands-on experiences in a natural setting. In addition, SIUC maintains a variety of lab and greenhouse facilities where students study soil and forest ecosystem processes.
