Through course work within and outside the School of Education as well as participation in ongoing research, all students develop expertise across a range of substantive areas and are exposed to various research methods. In addition, after the first year in the doctoral program, each student selects an area of specialization, which is pursued in collaboration with one or two primary faculty advisors. Specialization may be within a single branch of psychology, or may involve interdisciplinary work. Preference in doctoral admissions is given to students interested in pursuing research careers and with some prior background in the behavioral or social sciences, usually psychology.
