Russian Language and Literature Master from Stanford University details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Master

Russian Language and Literature from Stanford University is a Campus Master European Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures brings together professors, language instructors, and students who share an interest in the study of Russian and other Slavic cultures. The programs in the Department offer a coordinated study of languages and linguistics, literature and literary theory, history and theory of film, art and music - in a variety of cultural and socio-historical contexts. Systematic study of Russian literature in this country developed against the backdrop of political tensions following the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the fall of Communism, new perspectives on the literatures and cultures of this vast region have opened up. Russian and other Slavic languages still attract students seeking careers in diplomacy or teaching, but now they also offer gateways to a fantastically diverse world of cultures, each responding different to the post-socialist challenge (and they help students prepare for careers in business, law, and human rights, as well as policy and academia). Slavic and East European literatures and arts, including cinema, look different and are inspiring new analytical paradigms drawn from culture studies, literary theory, or elsewhere in human sciences. Topics of study that were formerly invisible (the literatures of smaller ethnic groups; gender; Eastern Orthodoxy and literature ; the cultural resonances of the centuries of interaction between Slavs and Islam, or Slavs and Buddhism) are now in the foreground. Global shifts compel rethinking of the very concept of the canonical "national literature " perhaps yet more powerfully in the newly reshaped region of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe than anywhere else.
