Art and Design Sculpture from Towson University is a Campus Bachelor Sculpture degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. The Sculpture concentration balances concept and process, building upon fundamental skills and ideas. Students are introduced to virtually all art-making tools, materials, and processes. They gain experience with figure modeling, carving, plaster and bronze casting, wood fabrication and lamination. All forms of welded metals and experimental directions, including installation and performance art, are explored. Skills and processes serve to support concepts and ideas. Students are guided through a carefully orchestrated program that builds upon art history. Students learn how art directions develop, how ideas about art and culture evolve, and how artists create aesthetic statements that manifest an understanding of concept and process. The major learning outcomes of the sculpture program will be demonstrated through creative work and class discussion, as well as the following: technical skills in carving, modeling, casting, construction, and assemblage technical skills in with virtually all materials from which sculpture can be made, such as wood, metals, plastics, clay, plaster, and synthetics understanding of how challenging ideas can be presented through materials understanding of sculpture's role, historically and culturally Students also are strongly encouraged to attend outside lectures, openings, and exhibitions, which further enhance their ability to produce successful artwork. Faculty and graduate students exhibit creative work, make their work accessible to their students, and serve as mentors to undergraduate students. Faculty exhibit with undergraduate students at times. Periodically, students compete with students from other art institutions in venues such as the Maryland Federation of Art Emerging Artist Exhibitions and the International Sculpture Center.
