Sociology & Anthropology from Agnes Scott College is a Campus Bachelor Anthropology degree that prepares you for a Science career. What does it mean to be a human being? Sociology and anthropology students at Agnes Scott deal with this question in a variety of ways and from many different points of view. Sociology focuses on the study of human society, including social action and social organizations. Anthropology compares societies and cultures, looking at both the unity of humankind and the diverse and unique ways different societies meet basic human needs. To gain insight into humanity, our students participate in internships such as the Washington, D.C.-based Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), and with groups such as the State Department of Mental Health, Interfaith Agency (which sponsors support services for homeless families,) the Department of Family and Children Services, the State Maternal Health agency and other related agencies. What will I study? Sociology and anthropology courses are heavily focused on women, race and class, and many are cross-referenced in the women’s studies and Africana studies programs. This gives students a unique vantage point not common at most co-educational colleges and universities. Sample courses include Marriage and the Family; Women in Latin America; Race, Class and Gender; Women, Health and Society; and Household and World Systems. Students are encouraged to organize internships of cross-cultural research or living experiences through Agnes Scott’s Global Connections program, as well as pursue fluency in a foreign language.
