And all of those hours are completed in the evenings and on the weekends. ?The academy is geared toward individuals who cannot afford to quit their current job,? said Sue Beecher, program director of the criminal justice department. ?We meet three evenings a week and on Saturdays and some Sundays. We spend so much time together that we truly become a family.? Class topics include everything from firearms and arrest control to human relations and communication, plus basic law, traffic laws and procedure and criminal investigation. The academy also stresses the importance of knowing a second language. ?Each student should have some working knowledge of the second language in the region where they work, which is Spanish in Weld County,? said Beecher. ?Not only does it make him or her more marketable for jobs, but it allows for more effective communication out in the field.? Students who are interested in the Peace Officer Academy must be at least 21 years of age,complete an application packet and undergo two background checks. A score of 80 percent or better in everything is required in order to move on to the next semester or qualify for graduation. Once a student graduates from the academy, he or she is eligible to take the state certification exam, and, upon successful completion, become a Peace Officer.
