Swedish Massage Therapy from Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics is a Campus Certificate Massage Therapy degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The undergraduate program at the Alexandria School consists of a single course of 42 weeks which meets Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Each day consists of a 1st session break, lunch/supper break and 2nd session break. Included within our required program is Basic Life Support/CPR. Students who are currently certified as a First Responder, EMT, or practicing Nurse; please see our Transfer of Credit Policy. At the completion of the school year students will have received 672 clock hours of instruction. A clock hour is defined as 50 minutes of instruction. Prerequisites for the course are that students graduate from high school/GED, have a sincere interest in the massage therapy field, and meet all requirements for admission to the school. The course includes the following: ? A minimum of 200 hours of anatomy and physiology, including special instruction on musculo- skeletal anatomy. ? A minimum of 250 hours of training in massage therapy technique and practice, which includes training in how to give a complete, full-body Swedish Massage . Seated Massage Class ? A minimum of 100 hours of law and ethics, business, massage history, benefits and contraindication of massage. ? A minimum of 100 hours of training in specific therapeutic modalities and nutrition, including an introduction to oriental massage techniques. ? 32 hours of Basic Life Support/CPR training. Objectives for the undergraduate course are as follows: ? To teach the benefits and contraindications of Swedish Massage Therapy. ? To teach the history of Swedish Massage Therapy. ? To teach basic Anatomy and Physiology with supplemental lessons in Musculoskeletal Anatomy. ? To teach students the physiological effects of massage. ? To give students information that will allow them to communicate effectively with other health-care professionals. ? To teach students how to give an effective, full-body, Swedish Massage . ? To give students information on establishing their own businesses. ? To familiarize students with ethical concerns and client-therapist boundaries. ? To teach techniques for assessing clients. ? To teach techniques for properly draping clients to ensure their modesty. ? It is our desire to introduce our students to a wide variety of Modalities, including Hydrotherapy & Hot Rock Massage (8 hours), Sports-Massage (16 hours), Seated Massage (16 hours), Aromatherapy (16 hours), Infant & Newborn Massage (16 hours), Geriatric Massage (4 hours), Pre-Natal Massage (4 hours), Manual Lymph Drainage 10 (8 hours), Active Isolated Stretching (16 hours), Iridology (16 hours), CranioSacral/Sacral Techniques (8 hours), Herbology (16 hours), Polarity Techniques (16 hours), Nutrition (woven in with all classes as applicable), & Oriental Medicine (woven in with various segments, as applicable). This is a total of 160 hours and gives us more than the amount claimed for specific Therapeutic Modalities, Nutrition & Oriental Massage Techniques. ? To teach therapists to care for themselves through proper body mechanics, appropriate attitude, and balanced nutrition. ? Courses are administered in a lecture setting with an Instructor: student ratio of 1:40, and in a practical work area with an Instructor: student ratio of 1:15.
