In cooperation with other departments in the liberal arts and sciences, the Education Department prepares secondary school teachers in Biology, Chemistry, General Science, English, Mathematics and Social Studies. These programs meet the Pennsylvania certification requirements for high school teachers in each of these areas. Students thinking about secondary certification should consult with the Education Program Coordinator in their specialty area as early as possible, preferably sophomore year. Three different approaches to secondary education are suggested. Students should choose the option best suited to them in consultation with their adviser. Option 1 : Complete all course requirements and student teaching during the four years of undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree and teacher certification at the same time. (Some courses may have to be taken during the summer.) Option 2 : Complete the requirements for a major in an appropriate field and a minor in Education during the four years of undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree and eligibility for a Graduate Intern Certification. This allows recipients to teach full-time in a public school classroom while continuing to take courses to fulfill the teacher certification requirements during the next three calendar years. These courses could be taken through Arcadia University's graduate program and would be credited toward a master's degree. Option 3 : Complete the requirements for a major in an appropriate field during the four years of undergraduate study, earning a bachelor's degree.
