Psychology from Assumption College is a Campus Bachelor Personality Psychology degree that prepares you for a Psychology career. Psychology is a science concerned with mind and behavior. Psychologists are interested in explaining how and why we think, act, and feel. Psychology is a very diverse discipline that can prepare students for numerous different career paths. Some specialties, like caring for people in psychological distress, are well known. Other specialties, like helping design work stations to reduce stress in the workplace or studying how we perceive things, are less well known. Psychologists not only have a wide variety of specialties; they also contribute to the field in different ways. Some psychologists are researchers and generate scientific knowledge to understand thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Others are practitioners and apply the knowledge to help solve human problems. Still others do both. The goal of our program is to introduce students to the breadth of the discipline and give them the opportunity to develop competence, both as scientists and practitioners. As a consequence, our curriculum requires students to sample from core courses like developmental psychology, social psychology , cognitive psychology, and abnormal psychology . Students are also required to complete courses to provide the foundation for doing psychological research. In addition, students are given the opportunity to explore more specialized areas within the field like psychology of deviance, development of gender roles, or women's studies. Students are encouraged to explore opportunities for independent research with faculty members and work in supervised fieldwork placements where psychological services are provided. We hope that students will work closely with a member of the psychology faculty to develop a program which will best satisfy their intellectual, vocational, and personal interests.
