Mission Statement The mission of this program is to provide innovative educational opportunities for preparing exceptional quality medical sonographers among Native Americans and other student populations where medical skill is coupled with Christian concern. Program Description Diagnostic Medical Sonography is an allied health profession that utilizes computerized medical equipments to generate high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) for diagnostic medical imaging. The Sonographer uses an instrument called a transducer to generate and transmit an incident ultrasound beam to body organs under study. The reflected ultrasound wave (echo) is intercepted by the transducer and converted back into electrical/analog signal. This signal is then digitized and fed to the system computer, which reconstructs and generates images needed for diagnosis. The AAS degree program in Sonography consists of didactic and clinical education components, which require 74credit hours and approximately 2 academic years to complete. Program Goals The goals of the program are to: 1.Provide an academic curriculum for the student to develop the cognitive skills to be a sonographer; 2.Provide a variety of clinical practice and scanning labs for the student to develop the physical and evaluation skills to be a sonographer; 3.Prepare students to pass the ARDMS examinations in the areas of Physics, Abdomen, Echocardiography, Vascular, and Obstetrics/Gynecology; 4.Prepare students to serve the community as a medical professional; and 5.Offer an environment of continuous improvement in student education and staff development.
