Learning Outcomes: Recipients of the Associate of Applied Science in EMT Paramedic will have demonstrated 1. effective written, electronic, and verbal communication with patients and other healthcare providers to effectively convey, collect, and document patient assessment and treatment information; 2. application of critical thinking to perform scene and patient assessment, develop a field impression, and apply appropriate therapeutic interventions in response to medical and trauma emergencies in the hospital and pre-hospital environment; 3. integration of knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology into patient assessment and application of appropriate treatment in the hospital and pre-hospital environment; 4. application of mathematical principles in the calculation of medication dosage and the interpretation of data; 5. professional behaviors consistent with the EMT code of ethics; and 6. competency in the performance of skills appropriate to the role of the paramedic. Specific Requirements: Selection for the program is based on grade point average for qualification courses and rating forms. Students applying for paramedic clinical courses must submit Required Information for Clinical Programs (described earlier in this section), pass a drug-screening test and a comprehensive criminal background check, pay a clinical fee, and meet all additional Bureau of EMS and clinical site requirements. Prior to beginning clinical classes, students must test out of READ 099 and MATH 097 as documented by ACT, placement tests, or course completion, and students must hold current state and national EMT Basic credentials. Paramedic clinical classes are offered as both a day and evening program. Paramedic training is intensive involving over 1,000 hours of didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field training. Advanced standing and articulation into specific EMTP courses may be granted to students who have completed paramedic training at Louisiana Technical College or another accredited institution. Documentation confirming current certification as a paramedic from the National Registry of EMT and State certification must be provided.
