Training in the Health & Mental Health concentration builds upon the skills-based clinical and macro methods courses that provide the basis of interviewing, diagnostic, and treatment skills for clinical students, and assessment, administration, and community practice skills for macro students. Specific practice skills will be emphasized depending upon one's area of interest ? clinical mental health students will become proficient in providing family therapy; clinical health students will learn medical practice skills; and macro health and mental health students will develop competence in financial management skills. The primary goal of the Health & Mental Health Concentration is to prepare students to enter the workplace with a unique set of practice and leadership skills. Experience tells us that our MSW graduates rapidly rise to leadership positions within a very short time after graduation, and some immediately upon graduating. For this reason, the Health & Mental Health concentration prepares students to assume and prosper in positions of leadership, and focuses on teaching tangible skills to prepare leaders in the profession. The Health and Mental Health Concentration prepares students for clinical and macro practice in health and/or mental health settings by providing specialized knowledge and skills in assessment, interventions, policy, program planning, and financial management. Clinical students will focus on treatment with individuals, couples, families, and small groups and develop skills in assessment and interventions that are relevant to particular problems and cultural contexts. Macro students will specialize in the financial management of non-profit and public organizations, focusing on resource development, budgeting, accounting, and the use of technology.
