English from Boston University is a Campus Master English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Graduate Program in English and American Literature at Boston University provides comprehensive training in English studies for prospective scholars, teachers, and writers. Course work is offered in historical periods, individual authors, important literary movements, literary theory and the history of criticism, and philology and linguistics. All students develop a broad competence in all literary periods before moving to a more specialized knowledge of a single area or topic. The faculty in the Department of English is large and diverse in its teaching and research interests, but the Graduate Program is nonetheless relatively small and intimate: about fifteen new students enroll in the M.A. Program in English and American Literature each year, and about eight students enter the Ph.D. Program in English and American Literature. Graduate seminars usually have seven to fifteen students. Individually-designed tutorials are frequently offered. The Department offers programs of study leading to the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. A student with a B.A. degree should apply to the M.A. program (even if his/her ultimate objective is the Ph.D.); a student with an M.A. degree may apply directly to the Ph.D. program.
