Chinese from Brigham Young University - Provo is a Campus Bachelor Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Purpose The Chinese major is a liberal arts program that is designed to develop competence in the Chinese language , literature , and culture. It is designed to serve students who wish to develop an appreciation for Chinese life and society through the language and culture and to develop practical Chinese language skills that may be used for professional purposes. Students in this program develop a sensitivity for and understanding of the peoples of the Chinese speaking world. In so doing students also gain a greater understanding of their own language and cultural heritage. The program is also designed to broaden the thinking and perceptions of students as well as to better understand the contributions and diversity of other peoples. As part of the College of Humanities, the minor seeks to foster an understanding of and respect for the meaning and significance of life as a Chinese. The program also seeks to provide a spiritual foundation for Chinese studies in light of scriptural injunctions to gain 'knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms'and to 'study and learn, and become acquainted with all good books, and with languages , tongues, and people'. Expected Learning Outcomes Graduates of the Chinese major should be able to . . . 1. speak Mandarin Chinese at the ACTFL advanced level, demonstrating an ability to negotiate face to face interactions as well as other formal and informal speaking contexts. 2. communicate and act in linguistically, socially, and culturally appropriate ways in Mandarin Chinese. 3. listen to and comprehend the main points of spoken Chinese on television and radio news broadcasts. 4. read a variety of written genres including literary and journalistic texts and other formal and informal forms of writing at an advanced level on the ACTFL scale 5. write notes, correspondence, and short essays at the ACTFL intermediate high level while demonstrating an awareness of literary Chinese writing conventions. 6. read and analyze selected texts in classical Chinese and demonstrate a knowledge of key grammatical patterns 7. analyze and discuss Chinese literary genres, works, and authors in their social, historical, and religious contexts 8. discuss and analyze the foundations of Chinese culture and how it influences selected aspects of Chinese language, literature, and/or linguistics. 9. analyze and discuss the structure and evolution of the Chinese language including the phonological system, grammar, morphology, discourse conventions, writing system, and dialects. 10. apply critical thinking skills and demonstrate English writing skills 11. demonstrate self-managed learning skills that will facilitate life-long learning including effectively using learning tools such as dictionaries and on-line language and cultural literary resources.
