Program Purpose The mission of the School of Social Work at BYU is to support the overall mission of BYU and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by generating new knowledge and by educating and training students to use the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities of the social work profession to serve children and families within their environments and the context of their specific cultures. Expected Learning Outcomes The graduate program and curriculum were designed and developed around the recognition that the MSW degree represents preparation for advanced social work practice. Therefore, the primary goal of BYU's graduate social work program is to help students develop, integrate, and demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge, values, and skills essential to competent and autonomous advanced social work practice with individuals, groups, and organizations. Particular emphasis is given to practice with children and families. The following are the expected learning outcomes for the graduate program. All graduates of the MSW program will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: 1. The comprehension, critique, and application of social work values and ethics. 2. The ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including populations at risk and groups that have experienced social and economic injustice. 3. The application of theories and knowledge concerning the reciprocal relationship between human behavior and social environment in order to promote health and social well-being. 4. The ability to understand and critically evaluate the impact of social policy on human systems at all levels with emphasis on vulnerable populations throughout the world. 5. The application of clinical assessment and empirically-based interventions with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. 6. The ability to develop, critique, conduct, and communicate research, in order to enhance social work practice and promote positive social change. 7. The ability to demonstrate competence in clinical practice with families and children, integrating social work theory, knowlege, values, and skills.
